The August meeting turned out to be ‘a laugh a minute’ as Margaret Rampling of Elston WI entitled her talk ‘Candles Quotes and Girl Talk’. The candles were lit, humorous anecdotes were shared, appropriate quotes were read as we reminisced about the ‘good old days’ of ponches, possers and dolly pegs which, depending on where folks came from, are either things you hang clothes onto the line with, or a milking stool on a stick that pounds its way through clothes in the dolly tub, before throwing in the ‘blue bag’ (which was always rubbed on bee stings wasn’t it!). We meandered along memory lane together, with cries of ‘my granny’s still got hers’, and ‘was butter really rationed until 1954’, until it was time for tea and socialising.
